KUCHING, May 3: Jack Voon Kuet Fei, a 47-year-old Sarawakian, set off on a remarkable solo journey around the world on May 1, driving his trusty 20-year-old Perodua Kenari, all in pursuit of his childhood dream.
As reported by Astro Awani, this digital media designer meticulously planned his expedition over the past five years, envisioning a voyage spanning over 200,000 kilometres, encompassing more than 100 countries, and slated to span three years in total.
Speaking at the flagging off ceremony, dubbed ‘Around the World Expedition Using Perodua Kenari’ held at the Menara 188 compound in Kuantan, Voon expressed his aspirations, “If the journey unfolds smoothly, I anticipate returning to my homeland by May 2027.”
He shared about his childhood fascination with the vastness of the world, a fascination ignited by glimpses of foreign lands through the lens of television, magazines, and newspapers.
“That’s where the desire to go around the world came from, but this endeavour is no small feat,” he admitted.
The ceremony was organised by the Malaysian Exploration and Adventure Association in collaboration with the Pahang Guanxi Trade and Investment Association and was graced by Kuantan Unity, Tourism, and Culture Exco, Leong Yu Man.
Voon candidly confessed that the demands of his professional life had nearly derailed the pursuit of his dream life, lamenting, “As I entered my 40s, I felt a pang of regret for allowing work to consume me.”
Determined to reclaim his aspirations, he resolved to prioritise his dream of traversing the globe, sacrificing leisure and social outings to diligently save for four years.
Reflecting on his choice of vehicle, Voon emphasised the practicality and safety of the Perodua Kenari.
Despite its age, the car has been meticulously upgraded, undergoing engine refurbishments, a fresh coat of paint, and outfitted with essential adventure gear such as solar panels and additional batteries.
“For me, this car is the most suitable because if you use a luxury car or a modified four-wheel drive vehicle, there is a big risk of being robbed or facing other problems when entering a certain country,” he said. — DayakDaily
