KUCHING, Sept 29: The Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) has urged the federal government to consider Sarawak’s proposals on investment incentives, strategic industries and industrial infrastructure under Budget 2027, describing them as important measures to support the State’s efforts to attract high-value investments and strengthen industrial development.
The matter was among the key issues discussed during a courtesy call by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak, on Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani in Putrajaya on Monday (Sept 28).
The meeting reflected Sarawak’s continued engagement with the federal government on investment, trade and industrial development, with both sides focusing on ways to strengthen cooperation in attracting quality investments, enhancing industrial competitiveness and supporting the region’s long-term economic growth.
According to a statement, the discussions also explored opportunities to expand high-value and emerging industries, including advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, the digital economy, clean energy and other downstream and technology-driven sectors.
Both sides highlighted the importance of ensuring that appropriate incentives, infrastructure, skilled talent and a supportive investment ecosystem are in place to facilitate new investments and encourage the expansion of existing industries.
Sarawak’s development priorities, which are aligned with the state’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and Malaysia’s broader industrial and investment agenda, were also emphasised during the meeting.
These priorities include creating quality employment opportunities, developing local talent, strengthening local enterprises and promoting technology adoption and innovation across industries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between the Sarawak and federal governments to facilitate strategic investments, accelerate industrial development and create broader economic opportunities for both Sarawak and Malaysia.
Also present at the meeting were Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) secretary-general Datuk Hairil Yahri Yaacob, MINTRED adviser Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais and permanent secretary to MINTRED Datu Lester Matthew and senior ministry officials. – DayakDaily
