KUCHING, Jan 30:  Questioning the sincerity of the Federal government, Kuching South City Council chairman Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng holds that Sarawak does not even know who it is dealing with in oil and gas (O&G) matters.

Following recent developments between Sarawak and the Federal Government, he said the Federal Government must demonstrate sincerity in upholding the Malaysia Agreement 1963  and respecting Sarawak’s oil and gas rights.

“As government, they must keep to their words.  It can’t be a case of now you agree to it and now you don’t.  It can’t also be the case that politician A says one thing and Entity B says another, which is contradictory and confusing. Sarawak needs to know who it is dealing with.

“The Federal government’s wavering attitude is a disappointment.  With such an attitude, nothing consecrate will ever come to pass, despite multiple and endless meetings and discussions.

“It is not surprising that Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi became so frustrated that he said maybe Sarawak is not meant to be in Malaysia, following the bickering among leaders in the Federal government,” said Wee in a statement.

Speaking on The Breakfast Grille with Wong Shou Ning on BFM 89.9 yesterday, Nanta had suggested that the endless quarrels and bickering in Peninsular Malaysia have become so pervasive that perhaps Sarawak and the rest of the country were “never meant to be one nation”, separated by the South China Sea for a reason.

Wee said what Sarawak government has been fighting is based on its rights enshrined in its laws and, historical binding contracts and documents.

The Sarawak government, he said, has been maintaining a very civic, sensible and open manner when dealing with the Federal government on its fight to regain autonomy and oil and gas rights, among others.

“Furthermore, to ensure national political stability, Sarawak has been very operative.  It has given a lot of support that the Federal government needed, as an expression of Sarawak’s sincerity.

“Instead of being appreciated, Sarawak found itself in an untenable position, repeatedly confronted by mixed messages from the Federal Government when it is asking for return of lawful rights,” said Wee.

Wee called on Sarawakians to stand firm on their ground in support of Sarawak’s leadership.

“If you classify yourself as a Sarawakian and a part of Bangsa Sarawak, its time to show your faithfulness by granting support to our leaders, including Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari (Tun Openg) and Dato Sri Nanta,” said Wee.  —DayakDaily
