Sarawak tourism minister inspects preparations for London Craft Week

KUCHING, May 7: Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah visited the London Craft Week 2023 exhibition site prior to its launching at the Malaysian High Commission, United Kingdom, yesterday (May 6) (UK time).

In a video posted on his Facebook page, he said the exhibition would be officiated at by Malaysia’s Raja Permaisuri Agong Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah the next day.

“London Craft Week is a very meaningful event for the artisans and craftsmen who are participating. For an event which first began in 2015, this year there will be around 700 artisans participating and showcasing their work at high commissions, embassies and various venues spread out across London.


“In view of King Charles III’s coronation and other events happening which sees more than 100 heads of state converging in London, furthermore, the environment is very lively indeed,” he said.

Sarawak is also participating in the exhibition with four Sarawak craft artisans doing live demos for Keringkam embroidery, Pua Kumbu weaving, basketry weaving and ceramic beading.

The event is expected to attract over 3,000 international visitors who would have the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of each craft to Sarawak’s unique ethnic groups.

At the same time, Sarawak’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib are expected to make an official visit to London Craft Week with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (UK time). — DayakDaily
