KUCHING, July 18: The Sarawak government will continue to study microalgae as a future superfood to be potentially listed as one of the agriculture activities in the future.
According to Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Sarawak has made a forward-looking move by venturing into the study of microalgae as a promising renewable energy option.
“Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad as well as Chitose Laboratory and ENEOS Corp from Japan has established the world’s largest mass microalgae biomass production facility, Chitose Carbon Capture Central (C4), spanning about five hectares in Sejingkat, Kuching,” it said in a written reply to SBC research officer Alicia Vanessa Jeffary today.
During the recently held Sunday Morning with Premier 2.0: Dialogue Session with Young Entrepreneurs on New Economy, Alicia had asked whether microalgae would be declared as agriculture in the future.
She also asked on the Sarawak government’s views on the impact of microalgae industry towards young entrepreneurs.
To this, EPU said the microalgae industry provides young entrepreneurs with diverse business opportunities in sectors such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy.
“It offers a chance to enter a growing market with untapped potential and encourages innovation and creativity.
“Collaboration and networking opportunities with experts and institutions enhance their prospects which allows young entrepreneurs to drive innovation, develop unique products, and contribute to sustainable development,” it added. — DayakDaily
