SIMUNJAN, Nov 27: Sarawak will introduce a Standardised Examination (Special Examination) for Year Six students starting in 2025, focusing on Mathematics, English, and Science.
Deputy Minister for Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee stated that the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) has approved and supports the initiative.
“MOE has given us the green light to proceed. This examination is not about pressuring students but aims to assess their learning progress,” he told Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) after officiating the closing ceremony of Simunjan District Education Office’s Career and Education Day at SMK Simunjan No 1 yesterday (Nov 26).
Earlier, Malaysia’s Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced in Parliament the abolition of examination-oriented learning to reduce student stress.
Instead, schools will focus on inquiry-based, exploratory, and experiential learning.
In his speech, Dr Annuar also revealed the Sarawak government’s allocation of RM20 million for the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP) in 2025.
“The Sarawak government has approved RM20 million for SEEP, which has two key objectives. The first is to increase the number of students entering technical and vocational education programmes to ensure a steady supply of skilled workers,” he said.
Previously, this programme targeted only Form Five students, but it has now been expanded to include Form Three and Form Four students.
“The second objective is to boost the number of students accessing free university education. This initiative ensures that the benefits of free education extend to students in both urban and rural areas,” he added.
Among those present were Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris, Sarawak Foundation’s Education Infrastructure Division senior assistant director Jolly Marikan, Sarawak Education Department’s Counselling and Career Management Sub-Unit assistant director Mohd Shaiful Nizam Mohd Zukki, Simunjan District Education officer Hasbi Ancheh, and SMK Simunjan No.1 principal Dr Nasir Len. — DayakDaily
