KUCHING, Nov 27: Sarawak will organise the Larian Obor Sukan SEA 2027 (SEA Games Torch Run) across multiple divisions to ensure the entire State participates in the build-up to the regional sporting event.

Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development I (Youth and Sport Development) Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the Torch Run will ensure Statewide participation and inclusion, as an effort to promote the games and excitement across Sarawak in the future.

“The programmes will foster divisions and community engagement as it physically connects different divisions and brings the spirit of the games to every part of Sarawak,” he said in replying to Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing (SUPP-Meradong) during question-and-answer session in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly today.

Earlier, Ding asked whether the Ministry has any plan to include Sarikei Division as co-organisers for upcoming Sea Games since the division has missed out on 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Following that, Rentap explained that the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) decided to concentrate all 17 selected sports in Kuching after evaluating infrastructure readiness and international-standard venues.

“The concentration of venues in Kuching is deliberate, driven by multiple strategic, logistical and technical factors.

“Kuching’s transportation network and hotels are more advanced than other divisions, allowing for smoother and more efficient movement and accommodation for athletes, officials and delegates,” he added.

Additionally, Rentap said residents in Sarikei would still benefit through community programmes aligned with the Torch Run, volunteer opportunities and increased sports inspiration among youth.

He noted that thousands of volunteers will be required for the Games, creating skill-building opportunities in event management, logistics and customer service. – DayakDaily
