KUCHING, Nov 24: Sarawak will invest over RM347 million in 2026 to strengthen its tourism sector and position the State as a leading eco-tourism and business events destination in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said RM129 million will go towards upgrading tourism infrastructure and facilities.
Key projects include transforming the old Sarawak legislative assembly building into a Performing Arts Centre, redeveloping the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Swimming Pool into a Water Fun Park and UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy centre, developing Sadong Jaya mangrove tourism, and modernising several museums.
“The State aspires to be recognised as one of the leading destinations for eco-tourism and business events within ASEAN.
We aim to deliver signature Sarawakian experiences that reflect our identity, celebrate our diversity, and position Sarawak as a destination of choice for discerning travellers,” he said during the tabling of the 2026 Sarawak Budget at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Meanwhile, RM194 million will be channelled to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts to drive marketing and promotion.
This includes hosting events and festivals (RM45 million); providing grants to the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Sarawak Art Council, and Sarawak Craft Council (RM106 million); sponsorships for cultural and heritage programmes (RM10 million); research grants (RM5 million); and other tourism-related grants (RM1 million).
An additional RM24 million will fund eco-tourism and conservation projects under Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
Initiatives include management of Gunung Mulu National Park, redevelopment of Bako National Park Gateway, establishment of a Nature Discovery Centre at Piasau Nature Reserve, and implementation of a Park Guides Training and Management System.
These projects aim to deliver sustainable tourism experiences while preserving UNESCO-recognised sites such as Gunung Mulu and Niah National Parks.
Abang Johari also highlighted efforts to boost Sarawak’s global visibility through digital campaigns, strategic partnerships with travel agencies and airlines, and participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions.
“The launch of our airline flagship, AirBorneo, will serve as a catalyst not only for domestic connectivity but also to promote Sarawak as the ‘Gateway to Borneo’ in ASEAN and global regions,” he said. — DayakDaily
