SIBU, Dec 31: Local authorities (PBT) in Sarawak will receive financial support from the Sarawak government starting next year to alleviate financial constraints faced by these entities in the region.

In a news report by TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that this initiative is vital to enhancing public services without imposing additional financial burdens on the people.

“Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Cabinet have approved allocation for local authorities to address revenue losses, recognising the significant financial challenges faced by many PBTs in Sarawak.

“This financial support will strengthen public services, which is critically important. Without it, local authorities might have no choice but to raise rates,” he said during the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) appreciation dinner on Monday night (Dec 30).

Dr Sim highlighted that most local authorities in Sarawak are grappling with financial issues because assessment rates have remained unchanged since the 1960s, despite rising wages and living costs.

“In states like Perak and Selangor, assessment rates have been revised, with increases reaching up to 25 per cent in some cases. However, Sarawak’s rates remain stagnant, making it difficult to meet public expectations for improved services,” he explained.

He also commended the dedication and resilience of SMC staff, who continue delivering quality services despite financial constraints.

“Their hard work has been instrumental in sustaining the services we enjoy today,” he added. — DayakDaily
