KUCHING, Aug 27: Sarawak will connect its 275kV electricity grid from Tudan, Miri to Kuala Belait and Lumut in Brunei, marking a major step in strengthening cross-border energy cooperation in Borneo.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said details on the project’s implementation will be revealed once negotiations between Malaysia and Brunei are finalised.

“This connection will link electricity between Tudan and Brunei through a 275kV grid,” he told reporters after officiating the Sheikh Othman International Conference held in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall here today.

Earlier in his speech, Abang Johari said the project, agreed upon during bilateral discussions with His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, underscores Sarawak’s emerging role as the ‘Battery of ASEAN’.

“From Tudan to Lumut, Seria, and finally to Bandar Seri Begawan, we will share our energy resources.

“This not only strengthens ties with our neighbour but also places Sarawak firmly within the ASEAN power grid,” he said.

He pointed out that Sarawak is already exporting electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, while talks are underway to extend supply to Sabah, alongside meeting domestic demand.

“With surplus energy from hydropower and new technologies, Sarawak can now contribute to regional growth. Supplying Brunei is only the beginning,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Abang Johari arrived at the Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC) around 10am to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on healthcare cooperation between Malaysia and Brunei. He later joined a luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister. — DayakDaily
