Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg witnessed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, which was officiated by Forest Department Sarawak director Datu Hamden Mohammad and Osaka Metropolitan University’s Prof Dr Yayoi Takeuchi yesterday night (Nov 10).

This initiative will strengthen Sarawak’s capacity to generate credible, data-driven reports for the Voluntary Carbon Market.

The MoU also expands cooperation into joint research on forest ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and the publication of scientific findings between both parties.

The MoU complements Sarawak’s existing partnership with Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), established in 2023 under the Premier’s mandate.

The visit continues in Osaka, where Hamden will share insights on Sarawak’s forest management initiatives in a lecture at Osaka Metropolitan University.

This move reinforces Sarawak’s mission to become a regional leader in sustainable forestry and carbon management. — DayakDaily
