KUCHING, May 9: English will be further used in Sarawak with its extended use as a medium of instruction in schools, says Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (Higher Education and Innovation) Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

According to Dr Annuar, Sarawak is allowed by the federal government to utilise the English language in both the primary and secondary schools, particularly in subjects in the science stream.

“We are also being allowed to extend the use of English as a medium of instruction not only in primary schools but also in secondary schools, particularly in (subjects such as) additional mathematics, biology, physics, and chemistry,” said Dr Annuar during the fourth day of the ongoing Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Furthermore, he added that Sarawak will also be allowed to do further assessments in the dual-language programme (DLP) as well as be given additional funding for the teachers’ development programme.

“More importantly, the Sarawak government is now allowed to share or access data within the Ministry of Education (MOE). This is very crucial for us to launch or implement some projects which are data driven so that the implementation is more successful,” he said. — DayakDaily
