KUCHING, Jan 12: The Sarawak government’s free smart school bus pilot at SJK Chung Hua No 6 has led to a reduction in traffic along Jalan Stapok, officials said, and contributed to lower carbon emissions in the area.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the pilot programme, which also involves SK Sungai Maong Hilir, uses buses equipped with tracking technology and communication systems.

“The system allows parents to monitor and communicate with their children in real time, increasing confidence in student safety.

“Early data from the tracking system shows fewer private vehicles on the road during school hours. This also means less pollution from car emissions, contributing to our efforts for a low-carbon urban environment,” he said when met with reporters after officiating the Free School Bus Programme and Smart Classroom initiative at SJK Chung Hua No 6 here today.

Abang Johari added that the State government fully funds the buses and operational costs.

Based on the positive outcomes, the programme will now be expanded to other urban schools, with implementation in collaboration with Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) and local communities.

The Premier also confirmed that the pilot will complement existing Yayasan Sarawak transport programmes, which are being upgraded with tracking and scheduling technology to improve efficiency and safety. — DayakDaily
