KUCHING, Aug 27: Sarawak will establish a RM200 million astronomy research hub in Santubong to spearhead scientific exploration and strengthen the State’s foothold in space sciences, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced.

He said the project will not only advance Islamic knowledge but also serve as a foundation for mathematics, algorithms and data technologies which power today’s digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI).

“I have asked the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) to explore the field of astronomy, and for the benefit of our Muslim children and the wider community we have approved RM200 million for the construction of this centre in Santubong.

“This facility will be more advanced, and we will work together with i-CATS University to bring in experts who can teach and share knowledge in astronomy,” he said when officiating the Sheikh Othman International Conference held in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall here today.

At the same time, Abang Johari emphasised that wakaf (endowment) must be embraced as a key economic instrument to uplift Muslim communities.

He pointed out that while Western billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are lauded for giving away wealth to charity, Islam has long prescribed wakaf as a means to redistribute wealth for the betterment of society.

“In Islam, wakaf is not optional, it is a duty when one has wealth. Through wakaf we can enhance the assets of Muslims, empower education and uplift communities,” he said, adding that RM5 million has been allocated to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), with the returns channelled to students for research.

The Premier emphasised that strengthening wakaf is not merely about giving away wealth but about creating a sustainable cycle that improves living standards and supports future generations. — DayakDaily
