Sarawak to compete in all 21 sports in Special Edition Sukma 2022

KUCHING, Feb 24: Sarawak will be competing in all 21 sports event in the coming Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2022 special edition.

Acting Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Semawi Mohamad said the Sarawak contingent is ready to take up the challenge.

“The strength of our contingent is 340 people (325 athletes) including officers and coaches as well as athletes for all 21 sports which will be contended.


“We are now 90 per cent ready. Our athletes have trained throughout the year and have also participated in exposure tournaments at national and international levels,” he told reporters during a press conference held at Pandelela Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya, today.

Semawi added, that the number of medals targeted will be announced by Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on March 10.

Meanwhile, Semawi said the Sarawak contingent has backup athletes from the Excellent Centre Programme to replace the 101 athletes who withdrew from team training.

“This means that the Sarawak contingent has no problem in terms of backup athletes because we have a total of 1,521 backup athletes from the Excellent Centre Programme who from all over Sarawak,” he added.

The Special Edition Sukma 2022 will be held in Kuala Lumpur in two of three proposed phases, either from June 17 until 26 (first phase), July 15 until 24 (second phase) and Aug 19 until 28 (third phase).

This will allows contingents’ participation to be controlled using the sports bubble model as well as ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the National Security Council (MKN).

A total of 306 gold medals will be contested throughout the event. — DayakDaily
