KUCHING, Oct 21: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has launched a travel campaign titled ‘Look, See… Chiak, Makan’ aimed at attracting Singaporeans for a getaway to Sarawak and experiencing its diverse food culture.

The campaign period will run from Oct 20 to Dec 15 this year.

Throughout the campaign, participating tour operators will bring their Singaporean package buyers to various restaurants or hawker stalls and include Sarawak Laksa or Kolok Mee eatery outlets in the tour packages.

STB in a statement said the campaign is a collaborative effort between STB and participating tour operators to build awareness about Sarawak’s tourism products and destinations to Singaporeans and to highlight its diverse gastronomy.

The campaign was officially launched at a ceremony held during ITB Asia 2022 at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore yesterday.

Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said people are making up for lost time after the easing of travel restrictions and these ‘revenge travellers’ are eager and itching to travel.

“The launching of the ‘Look See… Chiak Makan’ campaign is timely to attract Singaporeans who we know have a soft spot for gastronomy delights and are looking for a quick but memorable getaway.

“We hope that they will enjoy exploring Kuching, Malaysia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy as well as Sarawak’s other destinations like Miri city,” he said at the ceremony.

He also stated that there has been a strong showing of Singaporean visitors to Sarawak, with Singapore ranking third in the charts with 16,819 visitors from March to September.

This came following the resumption of direct flights from Singapore to Sarawak in February.

“While numbers are good indicators, we must seize this opportunity to creatively rethink and re-strategise how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the tourism industry,” he added.

During the launching ceremony, STB also signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS) and the Singapore Scout Association (SSA).

The MoU recognised SSA as Sarawak’s ambassador and partner in creating programmes to educate Singaporean youths, families and individuals on Sarawak’s rich cultural and natural heritage with the hope that through this generational lenses, Sarawak’s green initiatives and efforts in sustainability will contribute to the positive impact of global sustainability.

Also present were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development I (Youth and Sport Development) Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu; Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) permanent secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee; STB chairman Dennis Ngau; STB chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor; STATOS chief executive officer Chew Chang Guan; and SSA vice president Dr William Wan. — DayakDaily
