KUCHING, Nov 17: Sarawak is piloting the Grab Electric Sampan Proof of Concept in Kuching as part of efforts to modernise river transport while preserving the traditional sampan service along the Sarawak River.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative is a “modern reinterpretation” of the iconic wooden boat.
“This initiative embraces innovation while honouring tradition using electric propulsion and digital platforms to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity along the Sarawak River,” he said in a speech text read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian when officiating the Sarawak Rivers Day 2025 yesterday (Nov 16).
Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that it has received a proposal from Grab (Malaysia) Limited to introduce the Grab Sampan Proof of Concept (PoC).
“This proposed six-month pilot project, commencing from its launch date, will be carried out along the Kuching Waterfront River, covering eight designated pick-up and drop-off (PUDO) points,” he said.
He further said the Ministry, together with the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), welcomed the forward-looking proposal and will study it in greater detail to ensure its feasibility and alignment with our broader transport development objectives. – DayakDaily
