KUCHING, Sept 9: Sarawak is seeking to collaborate with Siemens Energy to strengthen its hydrogen production capacity and explore advanced gas turbine solutions, marking another step forward in its ambition to become a regional leader in green energy.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said his working visit to Siemens Energy headquarters in Berlin has opened fresh opportunities for Sarawak to acquire expertise and adopt cutting-edge technology, particularly in hydrogen production.

He noted that Siemens’ electrolyser technology is capable of producing 350 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour, compared to Sarawak’s current output of about 130 kilogrammes per day, a leap in efficiency that could significantly scale up Sarawak’s hydrogen industry.

“We have held discussions with the company, and Sarawak Energy, together with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, will study possible forms of collaboration in this process.

“This means we may learn from them, and in the future we will see how this partnership develops,” he said in an interview with Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) and TVS after the visit on Monday local time (Sept 8).

Accompanying him were Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki, and Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

The Premier added that beyond electrolyser technology, Sarawak is also interested in Siemens’ gas turbine solutions and Innovation Centre, which houses advanced simulation facilities for research and development.

He explained that gas turbine technology could be deployed in Samalaju with options for upgrades, while the Innovation Centre’s facilities hold strong potential for Sarawak’s future needs.

“This official working visit is very meaningful as it opens the door for new collaboration in green energy, in line with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a regional leader in the hydrogen industry,” he said.

Earlier, the Premier and his delegation met with Siemens Energy senior vice president and managing director for Asia Pacific, Thorbjörn Fors, and executive vice president for Global Functions, Juha Pankakoski. — DayakDaily
