KUCHING, Aug 6: Sarawak has suggested that the badminton event for the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) be held at Sibu Indoor Stadium.
Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told reporters this after officiating at the closing ceremony for Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Junior Championship held at SBA Badminton Hall in Jalan Lapangan Terbang here today.
“It (badminton) will be held in Sibu. They’ve got a big hall in Sibu. We have suggested (to Sukma) on the venue in Sibu,” he said.
If approved, this would be the second time Sibu Indoor Stadium will be a host venue for the national sports evet since the 2016 Sukma.
At the same time, Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) secretary Ting Ching Zung elaborated that the competition venue would use four courts, which is in accordance with Sukma’s standard.
“We have assessed that if we put five courts, it will be a little bit ‘sempit’ (narrow) so four courts are ‘just nice’.
“However, we will try to put five courts, if possible,” Ting stated.
Sarawak has been chosen to host the 2024 Sukma from Aug 17 to 24.
The 21st edition of the Games will be held in eight divisions throughout the State with 37 events to be contested. — DayakDaily
