KUCHING, Sept 23: Beginning in 2026, Sarawakians will no longer face financial barriers in pursuing higher education at state-owned institutions, thanks to the Sarawak government’s landmark free tertiary education initiative.
This was reiterated by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during the closing ceremony of the SPM STAR Workshop 2025 held at the MBKS Auditorium on Monday (Sept 22).
Addressing 198 students from 21 schools across Kuching, Wee reminded them that the SPM examination is a gateway to greater opportunities, urging them to embrace discipline and determination as keys to success.
In a media release, he also commended the students’ commitment to their studies and encouraged them to take full advantage of the State’s education initiatives, which aim to ensure equal opportunities for all.
Organised by the Persatuan Alumni Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar UiTM with support from MBKS, the Sarawak Education Department (JPNS), NEXGEN Petra Jaya, and Child Council MBKS, the workshop equipped participants with the knowledge, confidence, and motivation to excel.
Wee further extended his appreciation to teachers, parents, and organisers for their dedication in guiding the students through this crucial stage of their academic journey. — DayakDaily
