KUCHING, June 29: Sarawak Skills and i-CATS University College have partnered with China’s Foshan Polytechnic to jointly develop and offer customised programmes in hydrogen fuel cell technology under a ‘Kung Fu Workshop’ initiative.

According to a media release today, the collaboration was finalised through two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed on Tuesday (June 25).

Sarawak Skills executive director and Malaysian Skills Development Centres (FMSDC) chairman Hallman Sabri highlighted the significance of the ‘Kung Fu Workshop’ — an international vocational and education brand initiated by Foshan Polytechnic as Foshan is renowned as China’s hometown of martial arts and a manufacturing hub.

“Sarawak Skills is honoured to be Foshan Polytechnic’s first overseas partner to embark on the initiative.

“The brand Kung Fu Workshop integrates Chinese Kung Fu and vocational education concepts, craftsman experience, industrial technology and standards to promote international cooperation in vocational education and training, scientific and technological innovation, and entrepreneurial development,” he said.

The MoUs aligned with Sarawak Skills Group’s role as a stakeholder in the transformation of Sarawak’s digital, economic, and educational landscape.

The agreements enable Sarawak Skills, i-CATS UC, and Foshan Polytechnic to synergise their expertise and resources to develop and offer customised programmes in hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Sabri added that this collaboration will significantly support Sarawak’s clean energy ambitions, specifically its goal to become a regional green hydrogen production hub by 2027.

Additionally, Sabri mentioned recent staff development initiatives, where 10 teaching personnel from Sarawak Skills and i-CATS UC completed Hydrogen Technology Training at Foshan Polytechnic and Foshan Feichi Motor Technology Co. Ltd.

Following the training, the institutions jointly developed the Fuel Cell Vehicle Safety Officer and Fuel Cell Field Engineer programmes.

Meanwhile, i-CATS UC acting vice chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Shazali Abu Mansor emphasised that the MoU facilitates various cooperative activities, including student and staff exchanges, academic and research collaborations, exchange of ideas, information, as well as teaching and learning materials, and organising joint seminars and conferences.

Foshan Polytechnic vice president Prof Dr Zhao Yinsheng noted that the MoUs mark an important beginning for the institutions to jointly develop strategic and talent development initiatives, including the internationalisation of their respective institutions.
