KUCHING, Aug 23: Sarawak Skills will be one of the various Sarawak-owned institutions set to offer free tertiary education starting in 2026, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
This initiative aims to boost the local workforce’s skill levels and income.
Speaking at the 30th anniversary gala dinner of Sarawak Skills at Riverside Majestic Hotel tonight, Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak Skills plays a vital role in producing skilled Sarawakians.
“In 2026, we will provide free tertiary education to all Sarawakians at State-owned universities, including Sarawak Skills,” he said.
He listed institutions such as Sarawak Skills, Centexs, Swinburne University, Curtin University, i-CATS, and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu as part of this initiative.
“This applies to anyone with a ‘K’ in their Identity Card (IC). If you don’t have the ‘K’, minta maaf lah (my apologies),” he added, referencing the special designation for Sarawakian residents.
Abang Johari also noted that science-based courses will be given priority to align with Sarawak’s push towards a modern, green economy.
“We will focus on disciplines that equip our people with the knowledge needed to transform our economy. I hope that in the next 30 years, Sarawak Skills will continue producing the talent we need,” he said.
The Premier concluded by wishing Sarawak Skills success in achieving this goal. — DayakDaily
