KUCHING, Jan 1: A 1,706.7-kilometre unbroken aerial journey from Tanjung Datu to Lawas, completed by a relay of GPS-tracked drones over six days, has earned Sarawak a Guinness World Record, marking an unprecedented technological milestone for the State.
Unveiled during the New Year countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront on Wednesday night (Dec 31, 2025), the record falls under the category Longest Cumulative Distance by a Remote-Controlled Multi-rotor/Drone Relay and was announced moments before midnight to a crowd of thousands.
Using successive drones flying along a pre-mapped route, organisers maintained a continuous GPS trail across Sarawak, from the westernmost tip at Tanjung Datu to the northern border at Lawas, covering 128 flight segments.
The operation highlighted coordination, precision, and endurance while signalling the State’s ambitions in advanced drone applications.
The initiative further strengthens Sarawak’s narrative as the “Gateway to Borneo”, in line with the State’s aspiration to be more competitive on the global stage.
The historic segment was organised in collaboration with the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and was enhanced by the launch of a special drone film showcasing Sarawak’s natural beauty, cultural diversity, and modern development, followed by a stunning visual and light show.
The recognition from Guinness World Records was received by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian in attendance for the announcement.
With this achievement, Sarawak joins a select group of territories acknowledged for large-scale drone innovation, reinforcing its push to align technology, tourism, and the creative economy. — DayakDaily
