KUCHING, Nov 21: Sarawak’s Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) is stepping up disaster preparedness and public safety following a direct order from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), UKPS director Abdul Wahab Rahim said the Premier has emphasised the agency’s role as a first responder on the ground.

“The Premier of Sarawak has requested that UKPS strengthen the State’s safety elements. While these safety elements have already been established, they need to be further enhanced, including preparedness for crises and disasters.

“In the future, we will carry out rescue operations. While maritime operations are already in place, we will assess and implement measures for floods and landslides. The Premier has emphasised that these efforts must be strengthened,” he told reporters after paying a courtesy call to Abang Johari at Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Abdul Wahab further said key measures include deploying more trained volunteers in high-risk areas, empowering communities as disaster frontliners, and launching three new 40-metre vessels capable of operating for a week to secure strategic locations.

The Premier has also urged UKPS to digitise all services and adopt advanced technology for early warnings, data analysis and risk management.

“These initiatives will make both agency operations and community response faster and more effective during emergencies,” Abdul Wahab added. – DayakDaily
