KUCHING, Oct 17: Sarawak has been granted Conditional Approval (CA) by the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) to export 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy to Singapore, with power flow expected to commence around 2035 or earlier.
The approval was issued to a consortium comprising Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, recognising the Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project as technically and commercially viable, and enabling it to proceed to the next stage of obtaining regulatory approvals and licences for further development.
At a handing-over ceremony today, EMA assistant chief executive and chief commercial officer Eugene Toh presented the Letter of Conditional Approval to Sarawak Energy chairman and Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Sarawak Datuk Ibrahim Baki and Sembcorp Industries Ltd Group chief executive officer Wong Kim Yin.
The ceremony was witnessed Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong.
According to a media release, this milestone marks a major step forward in advancing regional energy cooperation, enhancing energy security, and strengthening economic integration between neighbouring nations in line with the ASEAN Power Grid vision.
Commenting on the milestone, Premier Abang Johari emphasised that the initiative plays a crucial role in supporting Malaysia’s pursuit of the wider ASEAN Power Grid, driving greater regional connectivity and energy resilience.
“Sarawak welcomes this positive development on the Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project. Sarawak has already established a cross-border connection with West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is now working towards new interconnections with Sabah and Brunei Darussalam to cater to the region’s growing energy demands,” he said.
With multiple interconnections and abundant renewable energy resources, Ibrahim said Sarawak is well-positioned to facilitate multilateral energy trading across the region.
“Sarawak Energy remains committed to collaborating with partners across Borneo and ASEAN to strengthen interconnections that promote energy security, shared prosperity, and the achievement of energy transition goals,” he added.
Also present were Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Secretary and Sarawak Energy Board member Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Sarawak Energy Board member Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani. — DayakDaily
