KUCHING, Sept 25: Commercial crime in Sarawak has surged by 57.67 percent this year, with 2,622 cases recorded up to August, resulting in total losses amounting to RM89.9 million.

Highlighting the sharp rise, Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata attributed the increase primarily to cybercrimes, including e-commerce scams, fake investments, non-existent loans, and phone scams, which collectively caused significant financial losses across the State.

“Among the key achievements of the Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) was the dismantling of three call centre syndicates in Miri and Sibu, leading to 18 arrests and charges under Sections 424A and 120B of the Penal Code.

“The department also successfully disrupted syndicates involved in fake gold trading and QR code scams in Padawan. To date, a total of 1,091 commercial crime offenders have been apprehended this year,” he revealed in his speech text during the Sarawak Contingent Police monthly assembly today.

Mancha also extended congratulations and commendations to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department for their diligence, perseverance, and courage in executing their responsibility to combat increasingly complex and modern commercial crimes.

“These successive successes not only demonstrate the team’s efficiency but also strengthen public confidence in the integrity and professionalism of the Royal Malaysia Police Sarawak contingent,” he said.

The assembly also marked a poignant moment for Mancha, who addressed his final gathering as Sarawak Police Commissioner.

“This morning’s assembly is my final assembly as Sarawak Police Commissioner. This moment is deeply meaningful to me personally. During my tenure, we have faced various challenges and shared many successes,” he said.

Although he will retire from service on Sept 29, Mancha affirmed his enduring support for the force.

“My heart and soul will always remain with this team. I will continue to support the RMP in its mission for public safety and welfare. My support for this team will never waver,” he added.

He concluded his speech with a call to maintain professionalism and integrity. “Let us, as members of the Royal Malaysia Police, continue to perform our duties with integrity and transparency, upholding the team’s integrity and the nation’s security,” he urged. — DayakDaily
