KUCHING, April 16: Sarawak has reported yet another record breaking number of 960 new Covid-19 cases in a single day, with 896 cases or 93 per cent of the cases already under quarantine orders.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Kuching — which led the daily Covid-19 toll today — registered a total of 370 cases where 313 of them were detected at the Borneo Height’s Police Training Centre (Pulapol), which is an enclosed facility.
“Whereas for Mukah that recorded 103 cases, 99 cases or 10 per cent were detected in the Mukah Polytechnic where the Jalan Bambangan Cluster originated,” he added.
Other districts reporting new cases were Bintulu (175), Sibu (100), Miri (83), Kapit (24), Belaga (20), Bukit Mabong (13), Serian (9), Selangau (7), Kanowit (6), Sebauh (5), Subis (5), Tatau (5), Marudi (5), Kabong (4), Sri Aman (4), Song (3), Lubok Antu (3), Betong (3), Samarahan (3), Matu (3), Daro (2), Bau (2), Beluru (1), Sarikei (1) and Tanjung Manis (1).
With that, he said the cumulative number of positive cases in Sarawak now stands at 22,920.
“Out of the 960 today, there are 452 cases that were detected following close contact screenings where 20 of them were symptomatic.
“Another 440 cases were from individual screenings from existing active clusters where one showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection,” he said during a press conference on the daily Covid-19 update in Sarawak today.
Additionally, he said 39 cases were from other screenings in health facilities, 25 cases were from symptomatic tests in health facilities, three Import-A cases who returned from Indonesia and another Import-B case who came back from other states in Malaysia.
With 381 new recoveries throughout Sarawak, there are still 5,050 patients who are receiving treatment in hospitals across the State.
Uggah, who is also deputy chief minister, also reported the expiration of three clusters in Sarawak namely the Melor Cluster in Pusa, Jalan Main Bazaar Cluster in Sri Aman and Kiba Cluster in Sibu.
There are currently 46 active clusters in Sarawak. Out of the total, 11 clusters recorded 449 new cases today while the remaining 35 clusters did not.
Touching on Covid-19 zones, Bau, Belaga and Selangau were converted from yellow to orange zones after recording more than 20 local cases in the past 14 days, pushing the total number of Covid-19 orange zones up to eight districts.
With that, there are now 15 red zones, 13 yellow zones and four green zones in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
