KUCHING, June 27: Sarawak recorded a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.5 per cent in 2022—an increase from 3.1 per cent in 2021.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) said the strengthening of Sarawak’s economy was influenced by the services sector, with a 9.6 per cent growth driven by an increase in transport activities following the surge in domestic and international travel.
“The demand for global fuel has soared, providing advantages for Sarawak’s manufacturing sector, which has oriented towards refined petroleum products,” said DoSM in a media statement today.
The department said this was observed through the improved performance of petroleum, chemical, rubber, and plastic products which increased by 6.1 per cent, further driving the growth of Sarawak’s manufacturing sector to 5.6 per cent.
In addition to that, Sarawak contributed to the agricultural sector (14.7 per cent), mining and quarrying (30.6 per cent), manufacturing (10.8 per cent), construction (8.8 per cent), and services (5.9 per cent).
Overall, Malaysia recorded a GDP growth of 8.7 per cent compared to 3.3 per cent in the previous year.
From the GDP per capita performance perspective, all states recorded an increase compared to 2021. The economy of all states also showed an improvement compared to the previous year.
Sarawak is also among the five states that recorded GDP per capita values exceeding the national level (RM54,863) with RM80,857 (RM66,027 in 2021). The other four states are the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (RM127,199), the Federal Territory of Labuan (RM85,560), Penang (RM69,684), and Selangor (RM59,908).
“The reopening of the country’s borders on April 1, 2022, has accelerated the recovery in all economic sectors, particularly the tourism-related industry.
“This performance culminated in an 8.7 per cent GDP growth in 2022, with a value-added amounting to RM1.5 trillion, surpassing the pre-pandemic value in 2019 of RM1.4 trillion.
“The services sector, which dominated the national economy, strengthened by 10.9 per cent from 2021, followed by the manufacturing sector, which rose by 8.1 per cent,” said DoSM.
The department added that during the same period, the agriculture sector recovered by 0.1 per cent, the mining and quarrying sector grew by 2.6 per cent, and the construction sector rebounded to 5 per cent.
“Despite global economic uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts, and food supply chain disruptions, Malaysia continues to be on its trajectory as all sectors grow positively compared to the previous year,” said the department. — DayakDaily
