KUCHING, Nov 19: The Sarawak One Stop Teenage Pregnancy Committee (OSTPC) has reported a 10.6 per cent decline in teenage pregnancy cases among girls in the State.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the government remains committed to reducing teenage pregnancies through multi-agency collaboration and data-driven interventions, as discussed during the OSTPC 2025 meeting.
“There was a 10.6 per cent decrease in teenage pregnancies from January to September 30, compared with the same period last year.
“This means we have successfully met our key performance index (KPI),” she told a press conference following the OSTPC meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
Fatimah emphasised the importance of providing comprehensive support systems for teenagers who are already pregnant, including guidance services, post-birth support, access to education, protection measures, and family-based counselling.
“This support system is not intended to encourage teenage pregnancy. It is meant to assist those already facing this situation.
“We want to help them start a new chapter in life, and we remain committed to the belief that every individual deserves a second chance,” she added.
Looking ahead, the ministry’s 2026 action plan will focus on enhancing the Sexual Education Advocacy Awareness Programme (KAPS) in collaboration with the Sarawak Health Department, strengthening engagement with NGOs, and implementing sexual education programmes for parents. — DayakDaily
