KUCHING, June 26: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg hopes that Malaysia will promote more cross-cultural exchanges and collaboration when it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.
Abang Johari said the country has always endeavoured to amplify rainforest conservation and sustainable development.
He pointed out that Sarawak as part of ASEAN has always been featured and plays a crucial role in regional environmental initiatives.
“ASEAN’s commitment to environmental protection is evident through initiatives like the ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme, which looks into protected areas of high conservation importance, preserving a complete spectrum of representative ecosystems in the ASEAN region,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in his speech at the launching of the inaugural Rainforest Youth Summit (RAYS2024) in conjunction with the upcoming Rainforest World Music Festival 2924 at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today.
His speech text was read out by Minister Of Tourism, Creative Industry, And Performing Arts (MTCP), Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who was representing the former at the function.
Abang Johari said that Sarawak is also proud to be part of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network, through the city of Kuching.
“By embracing technology, Kuching can lead as a model smart city in ASEAN and foster a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive future for its residents and businesses.”
He pointed out that programmes such as these foster regional cooperation, enrich dialogue with diverse perspectives, and have the ability to empower ASEAN youth with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to become future leaders.
“By participating in RAYS2024, you are taking the first step towards becoming the changemakers our world needs,” he said.
Also present were Abdul Karim’s deputy Datuk Snowdan Lawan, MTCP permanent secretary, Datu Sherrina Hussaini, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick, Sarawak Tourism Board chairman Datuk Dennis Ngau, and STB Chief Executive Officer Sharzede Salleh Askor. — DayakDaily
