KUCHING, April 24: Sarawak aspires to transcend into a leading hub and pivotal solutions provider, fostering an environment conducive to research and development (R&D) and the commercialisation of cutting-edge semiconductor technology.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said through targeted investments in infrastructure, talent development, and industry-academic collaborations, Sarawak endeavours to accelerate the pace of innovation and propel the commercialization of semiconductor solutions on a global scale.
To realize Sarawak’s vision for the semiconductor sector, SMD Semiconductor, a homegrown government-linked company led by Shariman Jamil was established.
In recent years, he said, the semiconductor landscape has witnessed a paradigm shift, with compound semiconductors emerging as the cornerstone of next-generation technologies. In 5G networks, they enable faster data transmission and greater capacity.
In power electronics, they create more efficient devices for electric vehicles and renewable energy. Additionally, they drive advancements in photonics, optoelectronics, and sensors, benefiting healthcare, aerospace, and defences.
Recognising this, the Sarawak government views compound semiconductors as vital for innovation, economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
“We believe that embracing compound semiconductor technologies can unlock new opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitiveness on both the regional and global stages.
“Moreover, investing in compound semiconductors aligns seamlessly with our long-term vision of positioning Sarawak as a premier destination for high-tech manufacturing and innovation,” said Abang Johari when witnessing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between Sarawak’s SMD Semiconductor and Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult of the United Kingdom at the House of Commons, Westminster yesterday (April 22).
He said Sarawak has also heavily invested in Sama Jaya High-Tech Park, a state-of-the-art industrial zone strategically situated in Kuching, which serves as a testament to the State’s commitment to fostering technological innovation and industrial growth.
Additionally, the Sarawak government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to further elevate its technological infrastructure — the development of the Kuching High-Tech Park.
Encompassing an expansive area of 738.6 hectares within the city of Kuching, Sarawak’s capital, this visionary project is slated for completion by 2030.
Abang Johari added that SMD Semiconductor is embarking on a significant initiative within the compound semiconductor sector in the UK.
Currently, SMD strategically engages in collaborative efforts within the UK’s compound semiconductor industry, harnessing collective expertise and resources for impactful research, development, and successful market penetration. — DayakDaily
