KUCHING, Jan 6: Sarawak plans to take the lead in reviving the Borneo Games this year, says Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He revealed that discussions are already underway with Brunei, Kalimantan, Sabah, and Labuan to revive the Borneo Games, which were once held but later discontinued.
“It won’t involve too many events initially, as we want to start small.
“We’re considering 4 to 5 sports in the beginning, with room for expansion as the event grows,” he said at a press conference held at Godown Amphitheatre, Kuching Waterfront, here today.
He further mentioned that if plans proceed smoothly, the first revived Borneo Games could take place as early as this year, with Sarawak as the host.
“We’re still in the planning stages (on the events to be contested) and negotiating with other regions, including Kalimantan, Brunei, Labuan, and Sabah.
“Once finalised, we hope to make the event a reality,” Abdul Karim added.
The first Borneo Games was hosted by Brunei in 1954. After that, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei then took turns to host the Games before it was last held in Brunei in 2009. – DayakDaily
