SIBU, Jan 5: Sarawak is the only State in Malaysia to establish a one-stop centre (OSC) to combat drug abuse, says State National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director Abdul Hamediee Ibrahim.

In a news report by Bernama today, he said the initiative has enhanced efforts to tackle drug addiction in the State.

“When I arrived in Sarawak last year, I noticed a distinct difference compared to other states I had visited. Sarawak stands out in tackling drug addiction with the setting up of the OSC.

“The OSC not only addresses drug-related problems but also other social issues that can lead to drug addiction.

“This makes Sarawak’s approach commendable,” Bernama reported him saying at the Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Appreciation Night organised by the Sibu OSC-MIDS Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Working Committee last night (Jan 4).

At the same time, Abdul Hamediee acknowledged that it is challenging to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts, which is a process that requires commitment and cooperation from various parties.

Therefore, he said the Sarawak AADK plans to recruit 77,000 individuals aged between 15 and 45 as Anti-Drug Squad members to enhance efforts in addressing drug addiction.

He said to date, 10,000 members have been registered and the response has been encouraging. — DayakDaily
