KUCHING, Jan 5: Sarawak is now among the preferred destinations for tourists from Indonesia which is a very encouraging development, says Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

According to a TVS news report last night (Jan 4), Abdul Karim said previously that a large number of the State’s tourists were from Brunei, but the numbers of those from Indonesia were starting to increase.

“In fact, I myself realised this a few days before the New Year celebration due to congestion at the Tebedu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex.

“This is a good sign because it will contribute to our economy,” he said.

He added that most of the tourists from Indonesia are from Jakarta, Pontianak, and Sambas; reflecting the effectiveness of Sarawak’s promotion programmes abroad.

Earlier, Abdul Karim, who was at the Boney M 50th Anniversary Tour at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night said Sarawak has set a target of receiving more than five million tourists this year. — DayakDaily
