KUCHING, May 18: Sarawak is currently in negotiations with the Federal government to reclaim the proceeds from stamp duty collected from land sales within the State, asserting that the land belongs to the region.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that the duty is obtained through land transactions, and since the land is the property of the Sarawak government, the proceeds should rightfully belong to Sarawak.
“So why was the collection taken by the Federal government? It should be taken by us, and this matter is still under negotiation,” he said during the Sarawak Budget Discussion organized by the Persatuan Mahasiswa Sarawak Universiti Malaya Faculty of Business and Economics.
The event, held at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, was streamed live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook page today.
He added that the Sarawak government remains committed to reclaiming Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63), including those outlined in the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) report. — DayakDaily
