Sarawak minister expresses grief over Sibu Jaya tragedy, calls for stronger child safety measures

KUCHING, Feb 5: Sarawak Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of three children who drowned in a pond near Sibu Jaya flats yesterday (Feb 4).

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Sibu Jaya which claimed the lives of three young children. The loss of such young lives is devastating and heartbreaking,” she said in a statement today.

The victims, aged between nine and 12, were reportedly rescued by members of the public before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Despite swift efforts, all three children—two girls and one boy—were pronounced dead by paramedics from the Ministry of Health. Their bodies have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

On behalf of her ministry, Fatimah extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, urging the public to respect the ongoing police inquiry.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this extremely difficult time. May they be granted strength, comfort and resilience as they cope with this profound loss,” she said.

The minister also highlighted the importance of ensuring safe environments for children.

“This tragedy underscores the importance of ensuring that environments accessible to children are safe and adequately safeguarded.

“All relevant stakeholders must review and strengthen preventive measures where necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children at all times,” she added. — DayakDaily
