KUCHING, Dec 3: The Sarawak Medical Committee (SMC) is expected to begin processing applications from medical practitioners seeking to work in Sarawak starting January 2026, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian announced during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

The SMC is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts in achieving greater health autonomy as under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, expressed his appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof for his support in advancing Sarawak’s aspirations under the MA63, particularly in the health sector, to ensure continued progress for the State and its people.

Among the matters discussed under MA63 is the delegation of regulatory powers over private healthcare facilities and services currently vested in the Private Medical Practice Control Section (CKAPS) to the Sarawak Health Department.

This transfer of authority had previously been agreed upon but is now under review by the Ministry of Health (MOH). — DayakDaily
