KUCHING, July 25: Sarawak has successfully completed its first-ever live pig export to Peninsular Malaysia, with local company Green Breeder Sdn Bhd delivering 800 pigs to Selangor in a trial shipment.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Sarawak Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom emphasised that Sarawak plans to scale up exports to 2,000 pigs per week once operations stabilise with future expansions into other states including Penang and Johor.
“The inaugural shipment signifies the start of a strategic logistics collaboration between Green Breeder and its key partners,” he said when witnessing the official loading of live pigs from Kuching to Selangor at Kuching Port Authority in Pending today.
Dr Rundi noted that the trial shipment served to evaluate the efficiency of the logistics chain and approved testing protocols established by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Malaysia and DVS Sarawak.
“This trial involving 800 pigs is a critical benchmark. Once fully operational, we expect exports to reach up to 2,000 pigs weekly. This initiative alone will generate RM8,000 per week in revenue for the Sarawak government through certification and export permits issued by DVS Sarawak,” he explained.
He also revealed that Green Breeder is currently exporting 2,000 pigs weekly to Singapore, with ongoing discussions to scale up the volume in the near future.
“We are extremely proud of this achievement, which moves us closer to our goal of positioning Sarawak as a major food exporter by 2030 under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, DVS Malaysia, and DVS Selangor for their full support in enabling Sarawak’s first-ever live pig export to Peninsular Malaysia.
Dr Rundi added that the development reflects Sarawak’s growing role in contributing to national food resilience and aligns with the broader agenda of enhancing supply chain security and trade sustainability. — DayakDaily
