KUCHING, Feb 12: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled significant progress in Sarawak’s efforts to reclaim control over key strategic entities, marking a pivotal step in strengthening Sarawak’s economic ecosystem.
“Last year, we were able to take back a lot of strategic organisations including Bintulu Port, and negotiations under MA63, we have managed to get back some of our powers including in environment, and there is something going on today and you will know later.
“These will establish a whole ecosystem in Sarawak where all these strategic entities are within our control,” Abang Johari said in his speech at the Chinese New Year Celebration 2025 Sarawak Premier’s Department held here today.
He further revealed that Singapore has expressed admiration for Sarawak’s distinct advantages, including its separate civil service, autonomous economic programmes, and strength in the energy industry.
Following his visit to Singapore, the Premier shared, “Our friends in Singapore said we are very lucky.
“We have a separate civil service, that’s what they told our State Secretary. We are slightly autonomous in terms of implementing our economic programme.
“And there is our strength in our energy sector.
“I must say here that the success so far is because of the civil service behind us.”
Abang Johari was in Singapore earlier this week to deliver a public lecture at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute on insights into Sarawak’s bold vision and strategic initiatives for a sustainable, low-carbon future.
At the event, the Premier also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the National and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, and commended the strong civil service for their tireless efforts in managing the state-wide flood earlier this month. – DayakDaily
