KUCHING, Sept 23: Sarawak and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in environmental sustainability, human capital development, and global policy innovation.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the MoU serves as a framework to unite Sarawak’s strengths with LSE’s global expertise, empowering knowledge, policies, and solutions beneficial at both the State and international levels.
“With more than 60 per cent of our land still covered in forests, rainforests, rivers, and biodiversity are Sarawak’s greatest natural assets. This makes our State an important carbon sink in the world.
“However, conservation efforts require global recognition and stronger international cooperation,” said Abang Johari during the MoU signing ceremony today in London, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
The MoU signing ceremony included the formal exchange of documents between the Sarawak government, represented by Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and LSE’s Professor of Environmental Economics, Susana Mourato.
Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate on executive education programmes for Sarawak’s civil service, scholarships for students, joint research, and the integration of sustainability leadership and ESG in government policies.
In addition, the MoU follows a roundtable session held at LSE in May 2025, where the Sarawak Premier and his delegation engaged with academic experts on natural capital, climate action, and the role of research and education in the state’s sustainable development.
The signing is seen as a significant step towards positioning Sarawak as a regional leader in the green economy, while also opening new opportunities in education and research through partnership with one of the world’s leading universities.
Among those present were Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Sarawak Attorney General Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning & Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, LSE Grantham Research Institute Acting Director Professor Giles Atkinson, and LSE Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Emma McCoy. — DayakDaily
