KUCHING, Jan 29: The Sarawak government, through the Sarawak Islamic Education Bureau, has channelled RM1 million towards the construction of a new male students’ hostel at the Islamic Da’wah Institute of PERKIM (IDIP) in Kelantan, aimed at improving student accommodation and safety.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the allocation reflects a joint effort to strengthen infrastructure at the institute, noting that while a well-equipped hostel already exists for female students, facilities for male students need to be upgraded.
“We already have a well-equipped hostel for female students, and we must therefore develop a new and safer hostel for male students.
“For this purpose, we will redevelop the hostel under PERKIM Kelantan, with the Sarawak Islamic Education Bureau contributing RM1 million,” he said.
He told a press conference after the 29th IDIP Certificate Presentation Ceremony held at the Dewan Kompleks Islam Jubli Perak (KIJP) Sultan Ismail Petra, Panji, Kelantan, on Thursday (Jan 29).
Abang Johari, who is also the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM) president, said education remains the cornerstone of Muslim community development, particularly in nurturing knowledgeable generations through a universal Islamic approach.
“This da’wah work is voluntary in nature, and this spirit of volunteerism is crucial in building our society, especially within the Muslim community. This approach is universal, and our methodology must also be universal.
“What matters most is the development of Islamic character, so that the mind, too, embraces a universal outlook,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari also announced a separate contribution of RM20,000 to PERKIM Kelantan.
Among those present were Kelantan deputy menteri besar Dato Dr Mohamed Fadzli Dato Hassan, Tengku Puan Temenggong of Kelantan, PERKIM vice-president Tunku Puan Sri Dato Noor Hayati Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, PERKIM honorary secretary-general Dato Dr Mohamad Marzuki Mohamad Omar, and other dignitaries. — DayakDaily
