KUCHING, Oct 16: The Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) plans to establish a Quran academy for youths to nurture more well-rounded young people in Sarawak and give them opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Quran.
MIS president Datuk Misnu Taha said the proposal was among the initiatives the council presented to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy visit here today.
He said the academy would operate under the Darul Hana Quran Centre to provide young people with a more structured learning environment for Quranic studies.
“With this academy, God willing, young people will not only be able to recite the Quran well but will also have the opportunity to understand its teachings gradually,” he said in a TVS report after accompanying International Qariah Champion Nur Syakura Mohamad Musa on a courtesy visit to Abang Johari to present her winning trophy and officially inform him of her achievement.
Misnu said Nur Syakura was also expected to serve as a supervisor of the academy, alongside Quran instructors affiliated with the centre.
In a related development, MIS is also implementing the Anjung Ngaji initiative to register Quran learning centres across Sarawak under the Darul Hana Quran Centre.
He said the initiative would enable the centre to monitor teaching activities, coordinate syllabuses and aid registered Anjung Ngaji centres.
“So far, approximately 800 Anjung Ngaji centres are affiliated with the Darul Hana Quran Centre,” he said.
Meanwhile, Misnu said the Borneo-wide City Al-Quran Recitation Competition would be held in Kuching from Oct 26 to 29, featuring 32 participants from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and five regions in Kalimantan.
Abang Johari is scheduled to officiate the opening ceremony on Oct 27, while Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will officiate the closing ceremony on Oct 29.
He said the programme was among MIS’s efforts to encourage greater appreciation of the Quran and nurture more promising reciters who could represent Sarawak at higher levels of competition. — DayakDaily
