KUCHING, July 28: Sarawak is currently in discussion to implement measures towards decarbonising local industries and energy systems through industrial carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS).
Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni highlighted that these efforts are part of Sarawak’s green economy initiatives, apart from unlocking hydrocarbon reserves for the Kawasari and Lang Lebah areas through the carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects listed under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) which was launched in Putrajaya yesterday.
Moreover, Sarawak has also awarded licenses for carbon trading and CCUS in March 2023.
“We encourage more projects and initiatives to generate more carbon credits from Sarawak to be sold to domestic and international markets.
“The revenue from selling carbon credits will further support and accelerate the sustainable development projects in Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.
Welcoming the launch of the first phase of the NETR, which aligns with Sarawak’s pioneering efforts in this field, Dr Hazland is also heartened that Sarawak’s contribution to renewable energy through hydroelectric power, green hydrogen projects, and carbon capture as part of the national contribution to climate change is acknowledged.
He emphasised that Sarawak is also developing its own Energy Transition and Integrated Energy Roadmap to ensure that the aspirations and goals in the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 are achieved.
“Sarawak remains guided by our PCDS 2030, which is the blueprint for Sarawak’s transition towards becoming a developed society by 2030.
“We welcome many more collaborations in the clean and new energy space and look forward to the rollout of the second phase of NETR later this year,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NETR announced ten wide-ranging catalytic initiatives to open up investment opportunities between RM435 billion and RM1.85 trillion by 2050.
The ten initiatives are an efficient switch to encourage energy efficiency; integrated renewable energy (RE) zone; utility-scale energy storage system; energy security in Sabah; green hydrogen in Sarawak, co-firing of hydrogen and ammonia led by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) in collaboration with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas); biomass demand creation; future mobility; future fuel; and CCS.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said NETR also opens up the hydrogen gateway in Sarawak as it implements rounds of projects to emerge as the hydrogen hub in the country and put in place the framework of CCS so that catalyst projects could be implemented in these two years.
