KUCHING, March 5: The Sarawak government and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025, to further advance the State’s digital transformation.
In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas highlighted that the MoU, signed yesterday at the MWC Barcelona 2025, builds on the strong foundation laid by the cooperation between the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and Huawei, particularly in the development of smart cities.
He said, the MoU aims to speed up Sarawak’s digital transformation by expanding wireless connectivity to suburban and rural areas, upgrading transmission networks to create a scalable and intelligent infrastructure for 5G and future innovations, as well as advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) development through infrastructure building, research, and tailored AI solutions that meet Sarawak’s unique needs and identity.
“By strengthening this partnership, Sarawak is positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation, ensuring that smart technologies continue to drive economic growth, sustainability, and greater opportunities for its people.
“I hope with this MoU, we can build a better future for the people of Sarawak, one that is more connected, inclusive, and filled with new possibilities,” he was quoted as saying during the MoU Signing Ceremony.
Uggah added that the collaboration between SMA and Huawei has paved the way for a more connected and efficient urban ecosystem, leveraging innovations in connectivity, data analytics, and intelligent infrastructure to improve public services and the overall quality of life.
Also present were Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Kalaka Assemblyman, Mohamad Duri, Deputy Sarawak Financial Secretary Datu Hasmawati Sapawi, Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Datu Jafri Lias, SMA general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong, Huawei senior vice-president Yang Ruikai, Huawei Malaysia chief executive officer Simon Sun, and other dignitaries. – DayakDaily
