KUCHING, Dec 6: Sarawak has begun supplying electricity to Sabah, activating the long-awaited Sabah–Sarawak power interconnection.

Speaking during a Shareholders’ Agreement signing ceremony between PMB Aluminium Sdn Bhd and BDA Capital Sdn Bhd at a hotel in Bintulu today, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the power export commenced two days ago (Dec 4).

“Two days ago, we have started supplying power through the Sarawak Grid to Sabah. Now, we can become the Borneo Grid,” he said.

Sarawak’s entry into the Sabah market involves the initial supply of 30 megawatts (MW) from the Northern Grid, a move expected to strengthen Sabah’s electricity reliability while creating broader opportunities for energy cooperation across Borneo.

Abang Johari added that the State’s power exports extend beyond Sabah, reaching West Kalimantan and supported by investments in North Kalimantan, positioning Sarawak as a major regional energy player.

“In fact, two days ago I was in Singapore, together with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), and we are going to supply one gigawatt (GW) of energy to Singapore.

“I told the Singaporean ministers that it is not ordinary energy that we are supplying—it’s green energy,” he stated, adding that the initiative strengthens Singapore’s green credentials while boosting Sarawak’s leverage in the regional energy market.
