KUCHING, April 8: The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), has handed over a total of RM1.93 million in grants to 43 youth and sports associations across the State.
MYSED Minister Dato Sri Abdul Rahman Karim Hamzah reminded the associations that while the grant may not cover all their needs, it is intended to support the ongoing implementation of their programs and activities.
“This grant is more than just financial assistance; it reflects the government’s trust in, and commitment to, Sarawak’s youth and sports community,” he said at a presentation ceremony held at a local hotel today.
Abdul Karim emphasised that the funding aims to empower associations in administering programmes that are inclusive, progressive, and impactful to the community.
He urged all associations to take a proactive approach in organising sports and social events, rather than focusing on funding limitations.
“Associations are encouraged to submit proposals for additional financial support from the ministry and collaborate closely with the Sarawak Sports Corporation to ensure funds are effectively utilised for successful events,” he said.
The minister also stressed the importance of accountability, encouraging association leaders to manage their finances wisely and transparently.
“To all who head associations, be honest and accountable. Set clear objectives, establish benchmarks, and ensure your efforts are meaningful,” he stated.
Abdul Karim clarified that his intentions are not punitive but aimed at strengthening associations and preventing efforts from being wasted.
He expressed pride in the achievements of certain sports associations in Sarawak, which have excelled at national and international levels. At the same time, he encouraged continuous improvement in sports where the State has yet to reach its potential.
“Sarawak is committed to enhancing our sports ecosystem. We continue to host major sporting events and have invested millions in infrastructure to ensure the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games can be successfully held in the State,” he added.
Also present at the ceremony were MYSED deputies Datuk Rentap Gerald Jabu and Datuk Ripin Lamat, MYSED permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron, and permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Morshidi Frederick. — DayakDaily
