Sarawak govt urged to lower Petros gas cylinder prices for all Sarawakian households

Senator Abun Sui Anyit

KUCHING, Dec 27: The Sarawak government has been urged to subsidise and further bring down the price of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for all households in Sarawak, especially now that PetrosNiaga, the retail arm of Sarawak-owned Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), has gained full control of the LPG market.

Senator Abun Sui Anyit believes that Petros, which now holds a monopoly on the LPG market in Sarawak, stands to multiply its profits.

“I congratulate the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) for appointing Petros, a company owned by the Sarawak government, as the sole distributor of subsidised LPG in Sarawak. I hope this monopoly will be used for the benefit of the people of Sarawak.

“As Sarawakians, we hope the Sarawak government will give back the fruits of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) rights to the people by fairly distributing LPG subsidies to all households in Sarawak so that the cost of refueling the gas cylinders can be further reduced from the current subsidised price,” he said in a statement last night (Dec 26).

He highlighted the fact that the subsidised price of LPG cylinders for household use remains at RM26.60, which includes the purchase of a new unit of Shell’s yellow cylinder and PETRONAS’ green cylinder.

He noted that Petros has maintained this price since being appointed the sole distributor of LPG in Sarawak from Dec 1, 2023.

With additional subsidies from the Sarawak government, Abun suggested: “The cost can be reduced to less than the current subsidised price of RM26.60 (for Sarawakian households). For example, RM25 per cylinder.” — DayakDaily
