KUCHING, Jan 21: The Sarawak government will construct a 26-kilometre (km) special bicycle path from Jalan Sultan Tengah to Pusat Peranginan Damai in Santubong.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report today, Utility and Telecommunications (MUT) Sarawak Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the 3-metre-wide route includes two routes to go and return and will be built next to the footpath.

He stated that the facility will ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians while performing their respective activities.

“Among the latest projects implemented by the Sarawak government is the project to upgrade Jalan Sultan Tengah starting from the Yayasan Sarawak roundabout up to Damai Resort.

“I have just been briefed by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) that the routes will be special routes for cycling for 26km.

“This is to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians when using the road,” he said, as quoted by the news outlet.

The minister told reporters this after officiating the ‘Kuching Car Free Morning’ (KCFM) programme at the Tugu Pahlawan here this morning.

Ukas further reported that the KCFM programme aims to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The initiative also aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the road while encouraging people to ride bikes, take public transport, or even walk.

The ‘car-free morning’ programme is held on the first and third week of every month with North Kuching City Hall (DBKU).
