KUCHING, Feb 7: The Sarawak government will gather detailed information on the tragic drowning of three children in a sewage pond in Sibu Jaya to investigate its causes and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In a TVS news, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the incident serves as a reminder that public safety requires shared responsibility and proactive measures, not action only after a tragedy occurs.
“Safety is not something to be considered only after an incident. Every party must play their part and fulfill their responsibilities. I will first obtain detailed information and then determine the necessary actions,” he said after officiating the Community Care Programme, Safe Residence with Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department 2026, Kuching Zone, on Friday (Feb 6).
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, also recalled that a similar incident had occurred at the same location in 2019, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures, particularly in areas that pose potential hazards to the public.
“Enforcement must be strengthened, but it is insufficient if the public does not understand the purpose of safety facilities. Sometimes fire hydrants are concreted over or blocked by vehicles, even though these facilities are installed to protect lives,” he explained.
He stressed the importance of respecting safety barriers and restrictions, particularly to protect children.
Dr Sim also urged the public not to assign blame but to work together to prevent future tragedies.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the victims’ families. This loss is heartbreaking and should serve as a reminder to us all,” he said.
The victims, aged 9 and 12, died on Wednesday after falling into a sewage pond approximately two metres deep near the Sibu Jaya Flats. — DayakDaily
