KUCHING, July 29: The Sarawak government together with Sarawak Volunteers (SV) will assist some 1,145 Sarawakian matriculation students who are due to register for their studies throughout 16 centres in Malaysia starting Aug 3.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said due to the current Covid-19 situation in Sarawak and the state government’s new guidelines on new entries into Sarawak, this will impact parents who wish to accompany or register their children in another state.

“Students from Sarawak who are bound for Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan for their matriculation studies will have to register themselves without the presence of their parents.

“Due to the new guidelines, therefore, the Sarawak government will cooperate with SV on the new initiatives to reduce the impact and alleviate parent’s burden,” he said in a statement, today.

Uggah, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman said the initiative was to assist students because they cannot be accompanied by their parents.

“SV will assist these students from airport at landing point up to their matriculation centre or college followed by registration process. Accommodation at hotel will also be given if necessary,” he assured.

Among the terms and conditions are Sarawakian students due to register at matriculation centres under Ministry of Education and Higher Learning in Peninsular Malaysia, Labuan or Sabah, as well as those who are not accompanied by parents. Flight tickets are be borne by students themselves.
